Dr. Piryaei Awarded Extraordinary Ideas Grant
Dr. Shabnam Piryaei, in collaboration with Dr. Angélica Camacho (Assistant Professor, Criminal Justice Studies, School of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement) and Professor Ana Lourdes Cárdenas (Journalism, LCA), has been awarded an LCA Extraordinary Ideas Grant for the project Home is the Mouth of a Shark. This live interdisciplinary discussion and video screening examines the criminalization and moral panic around asylum seekers in the US. This community event consists of a moderated virtual panel discussion between community members and SFSU faculty members from different disciplines to offer diverse perspectives on the changing asylum-seeking process. The discussion will include the screening of a short documentary about asylum seekers currently being held in ICE detention. The event will be publicly accessible to SFSU students, faculty and staff, as well as to the broader community, and will be documented and posted on YouTube as a resource.
