BECA Assistant Professor Position in Television Studio & Multi-camera Digital Production

San Francisco State University, Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Television Studio & Multi-camera Digital Production beginning August 2022. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include knowledge of professional television studio and control room technology, professional experience in TV studio production, critical understanding of the media and entertainment industry, and familiarity with media aesthetics. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

The Emmy® Award winning Department of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts fosters an inclusive learning environment that promotes creativity and scholarship in multiple forms of content creation. We represent the wide range of cultural, artistic, and scholarly interests of the San Francisco Bay Area and pride ourselves on offering a curriculum that balances theory and practice. Students get cutting-edge training and education in media theory, criticism, writing, business and management, as well as production. Our new state-of-the-art facility opened for instruction in Fall 2021 and serves our 600 majors in B.A., M.A. and MFA programs. Facilities include multiple television studios, remote video production equipment, video and audio post-production facilities, multiple audio recording studios, a student-run radio station, newsroom and interactive, interconnected authoring laboratories.

Responsibilities:

The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in a variety of introductory and advanced courses in television studio production, mentoring and advising graduate and/or undergraduate students, and instructional support for signature shows including Under SF, State of Events and College Sports Report; an active ongoing scholarship and/or creative work program(s) in one’s area of specialty; and ongoing committee and service assignments.

Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. or M.F.A., or equivalent terminal degree in relevant discipline(s). Degree inhand before appointment (expected Aug. 1, 2022).
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of professional television studio and control room technology. Professional experience in TV studio production.
  3. Critical understanding of the media & entertainment industry and familiarity with media aesthetics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Record of teaching contributions supervising student-driven projects using television studio multi-camera approaches.
  2. Active record of scholarship and/or creative activity related to the position
  3. Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and education equity in teaching and/or scholarship/creative works
  4. Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically underrepresented communities.
  5. Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environment
  6. Ability to teach courses in large-scale remote production, directing, and live arts event production with working knowledge of television ideography/cinematography, and lighting design.
  7. Knowledge of applied media aesthetics and the ability to utilize and teach creative approaches to TV and digital production, directing, and storytelling.
  8. Experience and understanding of current television program distribution channels.

Rank and salary:

Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
