Biography
Dr. Nancy "Sami" Reist currently serves as Chair of the Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts Department. Her research and teaching focus on the relationship between evolving media technologies and creativity, culture, politics, and the environment.
Degrees:
- B.S. in Wildlife Management in 1979 at Humboldt State University
- M.A. in Speech communication in 1983 at Humboldt State University
- Ph.D. in Speech Communication in 1988 at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Reist joined the BECA Department at San Francisco State in 1987 and taught Radio and International Media. She later chaired the University Tenure and Promotion committee from 2008–2010 and served as BECA Graduate Coordinator until 2018.
She studies and teaches environmental communication, media theory, and the social uses and effects of communication technologies. She worked with students to produce educational environmental installations and events in the online virtual world There.com from 2007–2010. She had students design and create missions for the online game City of Heroes. Dr. Reist had students create "Machinima" to tell stories using various online worlds and games to be presented later in micro-online film festivals.
