Dr. Patterson's primary teaching responsibility is in the area of interactive media technologies and research. He is engaged in an on-going investigation of the role of interactive technology in the creation and maintenance of personal communication networks.
Dr. Patterson's work has been funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and has been published in The American Behavioral Scientist, The Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Communication Research, the Journal of Media Economics and in several books. He is currently the producer of the Morrison Artists Radio Series.
Dr. Patterson is an active member of the Broadcast Education Association where he serves as Secretary of the Radio and Audio Media Interest Group. Dr. Patterson is also a member of the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences where her serves on the Education Committee of the San Francisco Chapter and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
