Trailer contest for Anti-Corporate Film Festival

CounterCorp, a San Francisco-based nonprofit, invites submissions of trailers for the fifth annual Anti-Corporate Film Festival in May.

The winning trailer will be posted on the CounterCorp Web site, screened before every film at the festival, and (depending on the festival venue) shown at the theatre in the days/weeks leading up to the Festival. The winner also gets two free passes to the festival ($100 value), a CounterCorp T-shirt ($20 value) and other prizes to be announced.

This is a great opportunity for filmmakers and other media artists to get public exposure and recognition and add to their portfolios/reels.
The trailers should relate to corporations in some way, but otherwise contestants are free to do whatever they want. Counter Corp wants to bring out people’s innate creativity rather than confine them to a specific vision.

Trailers can be no more than 30 seconds long, the resolution must be at least standard definition (720p) and the file format must be either an mp4 or an m4v. One trailer per entrant.

The deadline for entries is April 2. For details, contact Hillary Burkman at trailers2010@countercorp.org or visit the contest’s Web page.

High schoolers visit campus for Grammy Career Day

About 750 Northern California high school students came to the Creative Arts Building on Jan. 13 for Grammy in the Schools Career Day, an annual event about jobs in the music business. Photos and more on the next page.

A national outreach program of the Grammy Foundation, the one-day conference offers high school students an overview of the career possibilities and opportunities in the music industry, firsthand from established recording artists, producers and managers.

Grammy-winning singer and songwriter D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony! Toni! Toné! led a workshop on R&B production. He discussed the history of rhythm-and-blues music and performed parts of many classic songs, including Sly and the Family Stone’s “If You Want Me to Stay” and Tony! Toni! Toné!’s “Whatever You Want.” Pop Lyfe, a band comprised of students from the Oakland School for the Arts, performed with Wiggins.

“Real songs never die,” Wiggins said. “Real music lives forever.”

Other workshops at Grammy in the Schools Career Day covered gospel, hip-hop, jazz, artist management, songwriting, vocals and rock bands. John Barsotti, professor of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, led a workshop on mixing in the studio.
